 In 1882, Charles Cook Hastings bought 1100 acres of land for just $7 an acre, and established Hastings Ranch. It became know as a place for "easy living" and recreation. Hastings loved holidays, and always had a large celebration at Christmas-time. To this day, the Hastings Ranch community still honors this tradition with the famous neighborhood home decoration display themes.

Each year Hastings Ranch home owners agree on a specific theme to decorate the streets. The practice began in 1957 whereby each block in the neighborhood would decorate their homes with some type of theme icon placed in the parkway, e.g., snowmen, Christmas trees, Santas and reindeer, Peanuts cartoon characters, etc. It is the strong sense of community in Upper Hastings Ranch, which makes it a highly dsireable neighborhood.
